Chelsea Scored Five From 1.1 xG. Nobody Does That.

The story in one line: Bournemouth created the better chances at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and lost 5-1. Chelsea's five goals came from 1.10 expected goals, the most clinical single-game finishing of the Premier League season so far.

Dribble

Five goals from ten shots, six of them on target. That is an 83% conversion rate on shots on target, from chances worth 1.10 xG combined. The visitors, meanwhile, generated the better set of chances (1.38 xG, same number of big chances) and scored once.

For scale: the only other five-goal hauls this season took far more doing. Brighton scored five from 2.81 xG against Coventry on Sep 13; Manchester City scored five from 2.82 xG against Sunderland on Sep 20. Nobody else this season has beaten xG by more than 2.2 in a single game. Chelsea beat it by 3.9.

This is not new for Chelsea

Through six games Chelsea have now scored 15 from 8.39 xG, a +6.61 overperformance that is the best in the league. They were already running hot at +2.71 before Saturday (10 from 7.29 across matchweeks 1-5). This weekend they doubled down.

The other end of the same weekend tells the same story in reverse. Sunderland, the league's most wasteful side at 15 big chances missed through five games, lost 0-2 to Brighton while creating 0.72 xG and missing their one big chance. Six games in, Sunderland have 6 goals from 10.49 xG (-4.49), the worst return in the league. Wastefulness, like clinical finishing, shows up as a team trait, not a blip.

What it means

Finishing runs like Chelsea's do not survive contact with a larger sample, but they do survive contact with the league table. Six points clear of their expected output is six points that stay on the board. The xG verdict is simple: Bournemouth were the better side's equal in chance creation and lost 5-1 anyway. That gap, between what the chances say and what the scoreboard says, is where the season actually gets decided.
