The best football data API is the one whose licence, depth, and refresh match the thing you are building. There is no universal winner. A live-scores app, a university research project, and a commercial analytics product need three different APIs, and vendors who claim to be best at all three are usually best at marketing.

This page answers the question the way we answer it in our own sales conversations: by job, with the numbers on the table. Dribble is the right answer for one specific job: Opta-sourced event data and pre-shot xG, at post-match latency, for analysis, modeling, and commercial products, without an enterprise contract. Here is where it fits, and where it does not.

The Short Answer by Job

Your job The route that fits Price Licence
Personal project or research Dribble API Lite $19/mo Personal and research use, 1,000 calls/day
A production app that earns revenue Dribble API Elite $49/mo Commercial licence, 5,000 calls/day, daily post-match refresh
White-label product or high volume Dribble API Flite $149/mo White-label licence, 50,000 calls/day, webhooks, SLA
Bulk analysis in SQL, not endpoints Dribble on BigQuery From $49/mo Starter personal and academic, Pro and Max commercial
Files on your own disk, no API at all Dribble Downloads (Legacy Archive) $49 one-time Personal, research, and editorial use

What Makes an API the Best One for You

Four tests, in the order they tend to end projects:

Licence first. Commercial use (building and selling apps, dashboards, models, and published research) is permitted on Dribble's API Elite and Flite tiers and on BigQuery Pro and Max. Personal and research use is permitted on all paid plans. Raw-data redistribution is not included by default on any plan and requires a separately signed order form and data-licence addendum (our Terms, sections 6 and 8). If a vendor's cheapest tier forbids commercial use and you are building a business, that tier does not exist for you.

Depth second. Dribble's API serves 8 datasets: 90,582 players, about 210,000 player-match rows per season, about 12,000 team-match rows per season, 41,017 matches, 8,054 teams, 179,554 transfers, 72,299 managers, and 180,774 referees. The underlying event data is sourced from Opta under licence, with XY coordinates on every action and pre-shot expected goals (Opta qualifier 321).

Coverage and freshness third. The API covers 31 competitions and 6 seasons; 32 competitions are ingested daily across the platform. Refresh is post-match: daily on Elite, on a 72-hour cycle on Lite. Dribble is not a live feed, and we state that plainly because it decides the question for many buyers.

Cost at scale fourth. Rate limits reset at midnight UTC, keys are short-lived by design (2 weeks on Lite, 2 or 4 weeks on Elite, 4 weeks on Flite) and managed from the subscriber dashboard at dribble360.com/api-subscribers. If you outgrow endpoints entirely, the same data sits in BigQuery where you query it with SQL from your own Google Cloud project.

When Dribble Is Not the Best Choice

If you need live scores, in-play incidents, or pre-kickoff lineups, buy a live feed from a vendor who sells one; Dribble is post-match only. If you need hundreds of obscure competitions off the shelf, a breadth-first API will suit you better; our extended coverage (a further 2,172 competitions exist in the Opta outlet) is delivered on custom one-time tiers, per competition per 10-season batch, in 1 to 3 days, not instantly. And post-shot xG is not yet live in our pipeline: only pre-shot xG is mapped today.

Frequently Asked

What is the best football data API for a commercial app? The one whose licence permits commercial use at a price your margins survive. On Dribble that is API Elite at $49/mo (5,000 calls/day, daily post-match refresh) or Flite at $149/mo (50,000 calls/day, white-label licence, webhooks, SLA).

What is the best football data API for research? For personal and research use, Dribble API Lite is $19/mo with 1,000 calls/day, 8 datasets, JSON and CSV, and schema documentation. Trial keys are free for 3 days, so you can test before paying.

Does Dribble include xG? Yes, pre-shot expected goals (Opta qualifier 321), plus XY coordinates on event data. Post-shot xG is not yet live; we do not claim otherwise.

Is Dribble a live data API? No. It is a post-match API. Elite refreshes daily after matches complete; there are no live scores and no pre-kickoff lineups.

Can I redistribute the data to my own users? You can serve derived products (apps, dashboards, models, published research) on the commercial tiers. Redistributing the raw data itself requires a separately signed order form and data-licence addendum.

What if I need more than an API? The same Opta-sourced data is available in BigQuery (Starter $49/mo, Pro $149/mo, Max $499/mo) for SQL analysis, and as downloadable CSV files (Legacy Archive, $49 one-time for 6 completed seasons).
